Every January 1, I assemble my collection of footwear in an orderly line and take careful stock. I judge the success of the past year by a singular metric: the number of soles with rubber worn down to the nubs, leather to the pad. Hiking boots, double monk straps, sneakers, runners, boat shoes, flip flops – whatever. The rationale couldn't be simpler. Chances are, if I've been moving, I've been doing, I've been learning, I've been making. That's the benchmark – a curiosity rubric.
